PEarlene™ Silicone Master Batches

When makers of molded plastics seek to improve extrusion rates, achieve consistent mold fill and lower power consumption – all without making modifications to conventional processing equipment – they rely on Momentive’s PEarlene™ silicone master batches. During molding operations, our PEarlene™ process aids can reduce melt viscosity and increase lubricity of the molding compound, thus lowering melt flow resistance and easing mold release. Our PEarlene™ silicone master batches may also help improve surface quality of finished parts, including better scratch and mark resistance.

PEarlene™ functional master batches contain substantial levels of ultra-high molecular weight polysiloxanes (silicone gums) that are melt-compounded into a variety of suitable polymer carriers. They are typically stable and easy to handle. The PEarlene™ silicone master batch portfolio includes formulations applicable to polypropylene (PP), ethyl methacrylate (EMA) and polyethylene (PE) carriers.

By modifying the rheological characteristics of the molding compound, improving its lubricity and reducing friction, PEarlene silicone master batches help to increase fabrication efficiency. The master batches typically enable higher extrusion throughput. Molded parts with thin walls and fine detail may be produced with consistent, excellent quality. PEarlene™ silicone master batches can also increase the effective dispersion of additives when loading levels are high.

The improved flow characteristics imparted by PEarlene™ silicone master batches may also allow molders to reduce drive torque and machine head pressure, lowering energy costs and machine wear. And better flow also leads to less die drool and, therefore, to a potentially lower defect rate under certain conditions.

In addition to better scratch and mar resistance, finished components made with our PEarlene™ silicone master batches may feature enhanced impact resistance and a lower coefficient of friction. These master batches generally do not impact printability or bloom to the surface of finished parts.

PEarlene™ silicone master batches aid plastics molding in a wide spectrum of applications, including:

  • Automotive trim interiors
  • Office equipment housing
  • Pipes and conduits
  • Wire and cable coatings
  • BOPP (biaxially oriented polypropylene) packaging films
  • HFFR (halogen free flame retardant) compounding

Discover how Momentive's PEarlene™ technology may improve your molded products, as well as your bottom line.
